It’s a record day for Nick Folk, but he doesn’t want any credit

“It doesn’t matter to me, really,” Folk said. “I have never been one for the records. All this credit really goes to Jacques [Bailey], Joe [Cardona], and the line the last two years, and Cam [Achord], Joe [Judge], and Invoice [Belichick] for believing in me. Everything comes back to them. “

Folk, 36, hasn’t missed a field goal since September 20, 2020, when he missed a 51-yard shot against the Seahawks in the second quarter. However, he hasn’t been perfect during this span, missing two point attempts afterwards, including one on Sunday.

Folk signed with the Patriots in October 2019 as part of their revolving door kickers following Gostkowski’s season-ending hip injury. Folk finally beat Mike nugent and Kai Forbath.

Prior to signing with the Patriots, Folk hadn’t played in an NFL game since October 2017. During that free time, he earned his MBA and planned to start working at AMR Capital, a commercial real estate company in Dallas, where his family resides.

Now he’s back in the league for his 14th season. This year has been a bit different, as Folk started the season with the practice squad. Although he was initially released as part of the team’s downsizing, Folk said he never really doubted he would stick around.

“I just tried to control what I could control,” Folk said. “Whatever the team does, they will. If I was shooting well, I felt like I had a good chance of being here, and I felt like I was shooting pretty well.

Folk was right, as the Patriots temporarily lifted him from the practice squad to the active roster for their first two games. With an undrafted rookie Quinn Nordin (abdomen) in the injured reserve, Folk will likely sign a contract this week for a permanent position on the 53-man roster.

As the Patriot, Folk converted 47 of his 52 field goal attempts (90.4%) and 44 of his 48 extra point attempts (91.7%). Still, he made it clear that the stat that was most important to him was the end result.

“If we have to win 2-0 or 3-0 or score a bunch of extra points, I don’t care anyway,” Folk said. “I just want to win. That’s all I want to say.

Big hitter

Ja’Whaun Bentley led the Patriots with eight tackles, one for a loss … Yasir Durant got his second career start and first straight tackle instead of Trent Brown (calf). Durant struggled early, allowing several pocket presses before being replaced by Justin herron, who, despite the need for prompt medical attention, made things right and kept things going in the second half … Joejuan williams pivoted to cornerback post instead of JC Jackson and Jalen Mills during some second half heats. He finished with four tackles, one quarterback hit and one pass defended.

McCourty progresses

Devin McCourty recorded his 29th interception and is now tied for third on the franchise’s all-time list with Ron hall, Fred marion and Roland james. Ty law and Raymond Clayborn at the top of the list with 36 picks apiece… McCourty also became the third Patriot with 500 interception return yards after his 22 yards on Sunday gave him 515. Law (583) and Clayborn (555) are the other two.

Jackson action

Jackson is tied with Miami Xavier howard for the highest number of interceptions since early 2018 with 19.

“You make plays and your teammates feed on you, that’s defense,” said Jackson. “Don’t wait for anyone to make plays, go ahead, set the tone, and I hope your teammates will feed off of it.”

Dubious brand

According to Elias Sports, Zach Wilson is the third rookie in the past 40 years to throw four interceptions in his first 10 assists in a game. The Bears’ Kyle Orton (2005) and bills Nathan Peterman (2017) were the others … that of Carl Davis Wilson’s bag was his first career solo job. He had a half-bag in 2017 when he played for the Ravens… Members of the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils were on hand and featured in luxury boxes on the scoreboard. The Islanders were cheered, the Devils were mocked… The Jets held a minute’s silence to Greg Knapp, their assistant coach, died earlier this year from injuries sustained when he hit a car while cycling in California.
