Beware of this Veridian Credit Union Phishing Scam Text
Veridian Credit Union is a bank with physical branches in Iowa and Nebraska, but also does business online. I had never heard of Veridian Credit Union until today, and even after hearing about them, I have no intention of doing business with them.
My encounter with the name Veridian Credit Union came as a text message. The message stated that my Veridian Credit Union account had been suspended and provided a link to immediately undo the action. The first signal that came up was that I didn’t have an account with this credit union. The second flag is that financial institutions never contact you this way.
Veridian is aware of the issue, as it appears to be recurring. The company has a scam alert on its website and advises its customers to avoid these messages. We thought it was worth writing this article as the scammers are doing it again. It is important to note that your financial institution will not contact you by SMS. It is more likely that if your account was compromised, they would close it and wait for you to contact them.
“If you clicked on the link in the message and entered sensitive information, please change your digital banking password immediately and monitor your transaction history. We encourage you to enable two-factor authentication for services digital banking, where you will receive a text or email to prove ownership when you log in. You can also file a report with the Federal Trade Commission.
